Saxophonist and flautist Theo Travis makes no bones about the influence of the 1960s and 1970s on his latest group. Quite apart from a charming and relatively faithful cover of Syd Barrett's See Emily Play, the music that Travis has composed for Double Talk has more than a few passing similarities to pop and rock music from that era, too.
The opening number of both Double Talk's eponymous album and their first set here, Ascending, may recall the Thomas Hardy country and church-inspired work of saxophonist John Surman with its lovely soprano lines, but it also wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Focus album. The Beatles spring to mind during And So It Seemed's teased-out arpeggios - shades of I Want You (She's So Heavy) - and Portobello 67's Ticket to Ride-like innocence, and there's another hint of prog-rock in The Relegation of Pluto.
Rather than simply indulge in nostalgia, Travis carries these references forward to create a moody, melodic, occasionally becalmed but generally earthy form of jazz that belongs in the here and now. His robust yet elegant tenor playing brings an urgency that's matched by Roy Dodds's cracking drumming and organist Pete Whittaker's industrious basslines and spidery harmonic colouring, and if guitarist Mike Outram had played nothing else after his taut, bluesy string-bend-fest of a solo on Ascending, he still would have earned his fee.
